Lake Sentani is one of the biggest lakes and still virtually untouched by tourism. The people who call the shores of this magnificent lake home still live in a traditional manner, and are renowned for their woodworking and pottery. The short trip from Jayapura, pleasant as it is, offers a little foretaste of the province's magnificent sceneries. Take a relaxing paddle and canoe over Lake Sentani. The water here is very calm.
The General MacArthur Memorial is set on a hill overlooking Jayapura harbor and city. A number of old Dutch colonial houses can also be seen on the road up to the memorial.
The Irian Jaya Museum offers exhibits on a great variety of traditional, historical and archeological relics, artifacts, ceramics and pottery, as well as a collection of books in the museum's library. Abepura is the best place for ethnographic pieces and Asmat arts from Rockefeller Foundation.
For those who want to experience the pristine ocean and diverse marine life of this region, Tanahmerah Bay (Red Beach), located 50 kilometers from Jayapura is ideal for snorkeling. This is also a great location for scuba diving with World War II shipwrecks to explore at reachable depths.
Between Jayapura and Sentani, crocodile farms are home to crocodiles of all sizes used for conservation and breeding. If you’re willing to indulge in an exotic taste, you can even try crocodile meat while you’re in Jayapura
A number of local craft stores at Pasar Hamadi sell Papuan wood carvings, bark paintings, and other artifacts.
Hamadi Beach is a local harbor beach near the city. On the beach are four large artillery embankments from the Second World War. Further down the beach are the local fish markets. At night a number of food stalls are set up.
It is also known earlier as Humboldt Bay. Jayapura is situated on the bay.
